Many companies have 're-invented' Long Distance service, allowing long distance phone calls to be made using the Internet (instead of using local dialtone service for toll or long distance calls).
Some of these services include Net2phone, Internet Phone, Media Ring and even Yahoo Messenger.
Later, many of them began charging per-minute rates for use - and alot of the hype died off.
The use of the Internet for communications is emerging, and one company, Vonage is offering a technology with allows you to carry all of your calls (including local services) directly over a broadband connection. And you still get the same calling features like caller ID, call waiting, ect.
The monthly rates are comparable to other local providers that provide 'unlimited' LD plans. But the possibilities are endless.
How do they do it?
They provide a device which attaches to your Internet cable/DSL modem or router, and allows you to still get a 'dialtone', recieve and make calls as usual, and still keep your existing phone number.
Now you can use the Internet for more than just web surfing and email, but for local phone service as well. What a concept!!
Another advantage
If Vonage does not offer service for your area code, or if you prefer, you can use ANY area code they offer for your line. For instance, say you reside in one state, and want to have an area code phone number for a different state - its possible!!
Also, its simple to change your phone number at any time - for a one time fee of $9.95 (each time).
It's amazing how the Internet is changing the way we communicate, for data AND voice.
